Introduction to Printers

Thermal Printers

A thermal printer (or direct thermal printer) produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermochromic paper when the paper passes over the thermal print head. The coating turns black in the areas where it is heated, producing an image. Thermal transfer printing is a related method that uses a heat-sensitive ribbon instead of heat-sensitive paper. Impact Printers

An impact matrix printer (or dot matrix printer) refers to a type of computer printer with a print head that runs back and forth on the page and prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper. Laser Printers

A laser printer uses toner, rather than liquid inks, to reproduces high quality text and graphics on plain paper. Like photocopiers, laser printers employ a xerographic printing process but differ from most photocopiers in that the image is produced by the direct scanning of a laser beam across the printer's photoreceptor.
